Farmers' Market Haul

It's been a really cold wet summer so the first decent vegetables were just hitting the markets.

The CC came home with some tomatoes, onions, spring garlic, flat beans, zucchini and some eggs.

There were some obscure things that the CC considered buying but the prices were larcenious so they have been postponed to a future date.

We went to the local fm this morning. Picked up some zephyr squash, cantaloupe and ground buffalo (never had buffalo before).

I almost bought some herbs to plant but decided to hold off on those...got too much going on right now to start a new project.

Sweet! Check out this recipe for squash. Just make sure you fry the squash properly (Maillard reaction.)

Don't diss the recipe before you try it. This is a mega-hit wonder. Have faith in the CC!

Herbs are definitely a "project" at least for the CC in New York. Experimental basis this year with all failures reported. Somebody has to try it.

Buffalo is like beef only a lot leaner so if you're used to beef you are going to need to either add more fat or get used to the much leaner texture. Personally, the latter is preferred (the CC loves "chewy" meats) but de gustibus non disputandum est.

That's pretty much the standard way I cook squash/zuch, minus the herbs. Very tasty and (almost as good) easy.

The mint and basil sound like a nice addition. I'll give that a shot.

As for the buffalo my wife found a meat loaf recipe for buffalo. It called for two pounds so instead of halving we added a pound of pork (I figured the additional fat would add some flavor anyway). The recipe included some more porcini mushrooms and other odds and ends. It was very tasty. Wife didn't care for the flavor of the buffalo as much.
